Acute intermittent Porphyria (AIP)

Acute intermittent Porphyria (AIP) is an acute manifestation of a metabolic medical disorder which is part of a group of inherited disorders. AIP results from accumulation of porphyrins in the body due to deficiency of certain enzymes which are responsible for conversion of porphyrins into heme. Heme is usually present in all the body tissues, but is mostly found in red blood cells, bone marrow and the liver. The acute presentation causes symptoms like severe pain in abdomen, constipation, vomiting, muscular pain, convulsions, tingling and weakness, confusion, hallucinations, high blood pressure, and tachycardia. The skin can also be affected, causing symptoms like itching and rash.

Ayurvedic herbal treatment for Acute intermittent Porphyria (AIP)

The modern management of AIP consists of hospital admission, intravenous glucose, and hematin tablets, if available. There is no medication in the modern system of medicine to prevent or cure this problem. Simple Ayurvedic medicines can be used to control as well as reduce symptoms like abdominal pain and vomiting, and thereby prevent or reduce the need for hospital admission. Regular use of Ayurvedic medicines based on the Ayurvedic interpretation of the disease can gradually control all symptoms and help the disease go into a complete remission. After an initial phase of treatment for about six months, most patients affected with AIP can manage very well on their own without the need for multiple medications. AIP can be precipitated by medications, fasting, smoking, infections, surgery, stress, menstrual hormones, excessive use of alcohol, and exposure to the sun. It is therefore very important to avoid all aggravating factors and adopt suitable lifestyle modifications. It is heartening to note that AIP can be very systematically treated and controlled with the help of Ayurvedic medicines, using Ayurvedic principles of treatment.

Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS)

Acute respiratory distress syndrome is a condition in which the affected individual experiences a severe difficulty in breathing and also has associated symptoms such as anxiety, agitation, and fever. ARDS is usually caused due to severe body insult such as major trauma, sepsis, overdose of drugs, blood transfusion, or a major lung infection. ARDS results in significantly reduced levels of oxygen in the blood which in turn gradually leads to multiple organ failure in the body. All patients affected with ARDS need intensive care along with intravenous fluids, antibiotics, steroids, and mechanical ventilation with oxygen. In spite of all such efforts, mortality in ARDS continues to remain very high.

Ayurvedic herbal treatment for Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS)

Ayurvedic herbal treatment can be given as additional and supportive treatment for individuals affected with ARDS, in addition to intensive supportive care. Ayurvedic treatment is aimed at improving the perfusion of oxygen from the lungs into the blood circulation by removing the blockage in the lungs. In addition to this treatment, medicines are also given to maintain circulatory perfusion of the entire body and especially for important organs such as the heart, kidneys, liver, lungs and the brain. Ayurvedic herbal medicines are also given in order to treat the known cause for the condition as well as to treat and reduce inflammation and swelling in the lungs. Aggressive treatment with Ayurvedic herbal medicines usually results in improving the pathology in the lungs in about 4 to7 days and this improves the level of oxygen in the circulation, and the patient starts improving gradually. Ayurvedic herbal medicines are also given to improve the immunity of the affected individual so as to help fight against the infection affecting the body. Toxins and debris generated due to ARDS are removed from the circulation either through the gastrointestinal tract or through the kidneys. Combined management of modern, conservative intensive care as well as Ayurvedic supportive treatment usually results in a complete recovery of the affected individual within two to four weeks, after which further Ayurvedic treatment can be continued for another four to six weeks in order to prevent a relapse of the condition as well as long-term complications. Ayurvedic herbal treatment thus has a significant role to play in the management of ARDS.

Advanced Cancer

Advanced cancer is the stage in the life of a cancer patient where modern medicine deems the cancer to be incurable and the focus is more upon palliative treatment of different symptoms such as pain, easy fatigue, loss of weight and appetite, vomiting, weakness, breathlessness, and constipation. In addition to treating the symptoms, the other focus is on attempting to prevent a further spread of the tumour.

On a practical level, usually about two months’ time is required for this to happen and it is critical to use all possible means to help keep the patient alive so as to be able to effectively treat the cancer and achieve a long-term success in the treatment of such advanced cancers. The next focus of importance is to use Ayurvedic medicines in high doses in order to effectively reduce tumour size as rapidly as possible without any serious adverse effects. This reduces pressure symptoms and other physiological and metabolic dynamics which can increase morbidity and mortality. It is also equally important to improve the immune status of the affected individual so that the overwhelmed immune system becomes an effective tool in fighting against the cancer. It is also equally important to treat other symptoms which are serious or troublesome to the patient and which can differ according to the type and location of the cancer. The effective treatment for advanced cancer may require joint management by a team of specialist doctors, wherein intensive care can be given in the hospital, and additional supportive treatment can be given in the form of Ayurvedic medicines, in order to help bring about a remission and possible cure even in advanced cancer.

Age Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD)

Age related macular degeneration is also known as ARMD or AMD and is a medical condition which causes a gradual deterioration in the central vision of the eye. ARMD can be either wet or dry; the wet type involves growth of abnormal blood vessels behind the retina which bleed and cause rapid loss of vision. In the dry type of ARMD, there is a gradual break down of the light sensitive cells in the macula which causes a gradual loss of vision. A family history, female gender, age over 60, obesity, and a history of smoking are risk factors for ARMD. The modern management of this condition includes the use of oral medication, injections, laser surgery, and photodynamic therapy.

Ayurvedic herbal treatment for Age Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD)

The overall results of modern treatment in both types of ARMD are not very encouraging. Ayurvedic herbal treatment has a significant role to play in the treatment of this medical condition, both for the dry and wet types. Ayurvedic herbal medicines prevent a deterioration of the retina as well as the optic nerve, and provide micronutrients to the macula which transmits the sensation of vision to the brain. Ayurvedic herbal medicines also display an anti-inflammatory as well as soothing action on the micro capillaries within the retina as well as the optic nerve. The combined action of these medicines is to reverse the pathology in both the dry and wet types of ARMD, prevent further loss of vision, stabilize vision, and increase visual acuity in the affected individuals. Ayurvedic herbal medicines are also utilised to increase the general immune status of the individual affected with ARMD, so as to slow down the degeneration process both in the eye as well as in the whole body, and provide health, vigor and vitality. Immunomodulatory treatment with the help of herbal medicines not only speeds the healing and recovery process in ARMD, but it also ensures that there is no further deterioration or relapse after discontinuation of treatment. Most individuals affected by ARMD need treatment for about nine months to one year in order to get significant improvement in all the symptoms as well as vision. Ayurvedic herbal treatment can thus be judiciously utilised in the management and treatment of ARMD.

The mucous membrane has microscopic hair known as cilia, which can be regenerated so that they start working effectively to reduce infection and inflammation in the entire respiratory tract. Various medicated oils are used as local applications in the nose, and help to reduce frequent episodes of sneezing and watering of nose. The advantage of the regular use of such medicines is that they also treat nasal polyps, and provide additional benefits in the form of thickening and blackening of scalp hair, reduced hair fall, and prevent a deterioration of vision. Several Ayurvedic medicines can also be used as courses of two or three months to treat allergic rhinitis, recurrent asthma, and chronic bronchitis. People affected with allergic rhinitis may also be suffering from other allergic disorders such as eczema and asthma, and these conditions also need to be treated separately. To sum up, allergic rhinitis can be treated quite effectively with Ayurvedic medicines.

Alopecia (Baldness)

Alopecia or baldness is hair loss usually noted with respect to the scalp of both men and women. While generalized hair loss is known as alopecia, small and circular bald patches are termed as alopecia areata. Noticeable hair loss and the resulting premature baldness can be psychologically very disturbing, since a luxuriant hair growth on the scalp is considered a sign of good health, grooming and personality. Premature hair loss is usually caused due to a genetic tendency, chronic diseases, medications, stress, injury or damage to the hair, and as a side-effect of strong treatments like chemotherapy and radiation therapy. While actual baldness is more apparent in men, severe hair loss and apparent thinning of hair is more common in women; however, both types of hair loss can prove to be devastating for affected individuals.

Ayurvedic herbal treatment for Alopecia (Baldness)

Treating baldness or hair loss constitutes a booming medical industry, and various treatments for this condition have emerged, which include allopathic and alternative medications, local scalp treatments using laser therapy, shampoos and conditioners, as well as specialized treatments like wigs and hair grafting. Medicated oils for treating hair loss are available at all chemists over-the-counter, with new medical preparations being added regularly. Ayurvedic herbal treatment for alopecia is a systematic process of looking for the cause of the condition and giving comprehensive treatment for it. A careful history is important in order to identify and treat specific causes such as chronic diseases and the use of specific drugs or harmful treatments. It is best to avoid any known cause for the condition, if possible. Anxiety, stress, a harmful lifestyle, and improper nutrition to the hair roots are usually the commonest causes of premature hair loss in men and women. Ayurvedic treatment can be given as a combination of oral medication and local applications. Oral medication involves the use of medicines which can treat the known causes for the condition. In addition, medicines which have a specific action on the scalp as well as the hair roots are also important in the management of this condition. These medicines improve the blood supply to the hair roots and thereby provide better nutrition to the scalp, while at the same time removing toxins and unwanted elements from this area. These medicines also provide stimulation to the hair roots so as to help regenerate new hair and prevent hair loss. Oral medication is usually supplemented with local application in the form of medicated ointments, pastes, and oils which have to be applied regularly so as to provide good results. Local applications not only provide nutrition for hair roots but also treat skin inflammation, infection and dandruff, and thereby reduce the tendency for hair fall. Regular massage with medicated oils not only aids in hair regrowth but also relaxes the scalp and neck muscles and induces good sleep. It is equally important to give herbal medicines to treat stress and anxiety which are important factors which continue to propagate severe hair fall. It should also be remembered that the rate of regrowth of hair should be much more than the rate of hair fall in order to prevent noticeable hair loss and baldness. Most individuals affected with this condition require regular treatment for 6-9 months in order to get significant benefit from Ayurvedic treatment.

In addition, Ayurvedic herbal medicines are also used to remove the deposition of abnormal protein in different parts of the brain, which cause damage and dysfunction of the brain. This abnormal protein which is removed from the brain cells is then removed from the circulation either through the gastrointestinal system or through the kidneys. Alzheimer's disease is a chronic condition and in most affected individuals is already in an advanced state, by the time an accurate diagnosis is made. This presents serious limitations on the benefit that medicines can offer to such affected individuals. However, Ayurvedic medicines can be used in high doses for prolonged periods without any serious adverse effects, and can therefore bring about a slow but sustained improvement in people affected with Alzheimer's disease. Treatment needs to be continued regularly for about 9 to15 months.

Aortic regurgitation (AR or AI)

Aortic regurgitation (AR), also known as aortic insufficiency (AI), is a medical condition in which the aortic valve is incompetent and thereby allows a backflow of blood from the aorta into the left ventricle. This may be due to damage to the valves or enlargement of the originating part of the aorta (the aortic root). This can result from infections, drugs, or diseases like hypertension and chronic autoimmune disorders. Conventional management involves the use of medicines to control blood pressure and reduce peripheral resistance, thereby reducing the load on the heart. Long-term AR normally results in enlargement of the left ventricular, symptoms like breathlessness, and in the long run, congestive cardiac failure (CCF). Surgical treatment involves replacement of the defective valve.

This helps to gradually reduce the load on the overburdened left ventricle and thereby reduces or prevents left ventricular hypertrophy and the long-term risk for congestive heart failure. Ayurvedic herbal treatment needs to be given for periods ranging from 6 to 12 months in order to bring about significant improvement in patients suffering from AR. Herbal treatment is completely safe for long-term use and can be used along with conventional modern therapy. The long-term effects of Aortic valve stenosis are a decrease in cardiac output and heart failure, with common symptoms such as chest pain, fainting, and breathlessness. The modern management of aortic valve stenosis involves the dilatation of the valves or surgical valve replacement.

Ayurvedic herbal treatment for aortic valve stenosis is aimed at treating the leaves of the aortic valve as well as the associated tendons and heart muscles in such a way that the aortic opening increases partially, and at the same time, the cardiac muscles get strength and are able to achieve a good cardiac output. Ayurvedic herbal medicines which act on the blood, muscles, and heart valves, are used in high doses, for prolonged periods, in order to bring about the required results. Understandably, results are good and noticeable in the early stages of aortic valves stenosis, and may not be very effective in case of advanced heart failure. Ayurvedic treatment consists mainly of oral medication; however, this treatment can be supplemented with the help of localized therapy as well as oral Panchkarma procedures. The oral intake of medicated ghee results in a relaxation of the aortic valves. In addition, localized Panchkarma procedures aimed directly on the chest wall, in the form of application of medicated oils and ghee, also help in strengthening the heart muscles and in partially relaxing the aortic stenosis. Treatment is usually required for about four to six months, and can significantly improve the quality of life of affected individuals, as well as improve the overall survival of the patient. Ayurvedic herbal treatment thus has a significant role to play in the management and treatment of aortic valves stenosis.

Aplastic Anemia

Aplastic anemia is a medical condition resulting from bone marrow failure in which the production of red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets decreases drastically. Nearly 80% of individuals affected with aplastic anemia have some acquired cause of the disease which includes infectious diseases, toxic exposure, drug reactions, and unknown factors. A severely dysfunctional immune system is believed to be the cause for aplastic anemia. Common symptoms for this condition include severe anemia, bleeding, fever, and infections.

Ayurvedic herbal treatment for Aplastic Anemia

Ayurvedic herbal treatment for aplastic anemia is aimed at treating the known cause of the condition, improving the immune status of the affected individual, and giving medicines which act on the bone marrow. Treating the dysfunctional immune status of the individual is of utmost importance, since a strong immunity can help bring about an early reversal of symptoms and a complete cure. Ayurvedic herbal medicines which act directly on the bone marrow and stimulate it to produce the normally required amount of red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets, are used in high doses for prolonged periods. In addition, medicines which act on the liver and spleen as well as the blood tissue are also used in combination with the above-mentioned medicines. This combination treatment helps in an earlier remission from the symptoms of aplastic anemia, brings about an early cure, and prevents recurrence of the condition. The use of Ayurvedic immunomodulatory herbal agents reduces the treatment time and helps in maintaining the strength, stamina and vitality of the affected individual. Ayurvedic herbal treatment can also be given as supportive treatment in addition to modern conventional treatment. Treatment with Ayurvedic herbal medicines is normally required for a period of about six to nine months, in order to bring about significant improvement in the affected individual. Ayurvedic herbal treatment can thus be judiciously utilised in the management and treatment of aplastic anemia.

Appendicitis

Appendicitis is infection and inflammation of the appendix, which is a rudimentary part of the intestines. In the initial phase of inflammation, the appendix is very friable, that is, it can rupture easily. In this stage, it is advisable to admit the patient to a surgical hospital for close observation and treatment, and surgery if necessary. Once this acute stage passes of, Ayurvedic medicines can be commenced to help resolve the mass.

Ayurvedic herbal treatment for Appendicitis

Ayurvedic treatment for appendicitis is aimed at treating the infection, helping the inflammation subside, and dissolving the lump. The herbal medicines useful for this have special properties to not only control the infection, but to improve the blood supply to the appendix, without causing any harm to the organ. This helps in detoxifying the mass, as well clearing the debris from the area. The appendicular lump thus starts dissolving slowly, and the appendix heals completely over time. The advantage of this type of treatment is that the appendicitis can be cured completely, so that further episodes of infection and inflammation are prevented. This is especially useful in patients with appendicitis, who cannot be operated upon, or who have recurrent episodes. Ayurvedic treatment is usually given for three months, after which people with two or three recurrent episodes have been symptom-free since the last fifteen to twenty years. While this treatment has also been successfully used in patients with severe and acute infection of the appendix, this is not routinely recommended because of the potential risk of perforation, and its resulting complications. Judiciously used, Ayurvedic treatment can thus prove to be a boon for patients who experience the painful and often frustrating episodes of recurrent appendicitis.

Ascites

Ascites is a medical condition in which there is an abnormal collection of fluid in the abdominal cavity, usually resulting from liver disease caused by alcoholism, chronic viral hepatitis, and drug abuse; however, tumours, obstruction in the portal vein, and protein loss can also be causes for ascites. The modern management of ascites involves treatment of the known cause for the condition as well as removal of excess fluid by tapping procedures.

Ayurvedic herbal treatment for Ascites

Ayurvedic herbal treatment for ascites includes oral medication to treat the known causes for the condition, specific treatment to reduce accumulation of fluid, as well as treatment to remove the obstruction, which is usually present due to cirrhosis of the liver. Diet regulation plays an important part in the Ayurvedic management of ascites. Most patients with confirmed ascites are initially given an exclusive diet of milk for six months, followed by a mixture of milk and other liquids for another three months, after which light diet is advised for another three months. The obstruction which usually causes ascites can be either a large-sized clot of thrombus in the inferior vena cava, or cirrhosis of the liver which prevents circulation inside the liver. Ayurvedic herbal medicines are used to treat the specific obstruction which is the known cause of the pathology in affected individuals. Ayurvedic herbal medicines with act on the clot and gradually dissolve the clot are given for prolonged periods in high doses, in order to reverse the condition. Alternatively, Ayurvedic herbal medicines which have a specific action on the liver cells and prevent death, degeneration and cirrhosis of the liver cells are used for prolonged periods. During this treatment, dead cells, toxins, and other debris are formed as a part of treatment which are then flushed out of the body through the blood circulation either through the gastrointestinal tract or through the kidneys. Regular, mild purgation is also given in order to achieve this flushing out of toxins as well as to remove the accumulated fluid in the abdominal cavity. Treatment is usually required for periods ranging from 9 to 15 months; however, most people affected with ascites, who take regular treatment can get significant benefit from Ayurvedic herbal treatment.

Asthma

Bronchial asthma is a medical condition in which there are recurrent episodes of breathlessness and wheezing in the lungs, usually resulting from allergy to dust mite, pollen grain, dust and different foodstuffs. Bronchial asthma is a chronic condition which can seriously affect quality of life and result in frequent absences from school or work places. The modern management of bronchial asthma involves the use of oral medication as well as different types of inhalers, which serve to control an attack as well as gradually reduce the frequency of episodes; however, these treatments cannot completely eradicate the disease.

Ayurvedic herbal treatment for Asthma

Ayurvedic herbal treatment for bronchial asthma is aimed at treating the pathology in the lungs as well as increasing the strength and resistance power of the respiratory mucosa so as to gradually reduce symptoms as well as the frequency and severity of recurrent episodes. The large airways in the lungs are believed to have increased reactivity in individuals affected with bronchial asthma. This leads to chronic inflammation in the lungs with an increased amount of mucous production which blocks the airways and further aggravates breathlessness. The chronic inflammation gradually leads to permanent damage of the respiratory mucosa within the lungs. Ayurvedic herbal medicines treat the inflammation in the lungs and gradually reduce the amount of mucous production as well as hyper-reactivity of the airways. In addition, some herbal medicines have a direct and specific action on the respiratory mucosa and help in a complete healing of the mucosa along with strengthening so that it gradually becomes immune to offending substances. This gradually leads to a reduction in the frequency and severity of the episodes of bronchial asthma. Once this stage is achieved, further treatment is given in order to improve the overall immune status of the individual as well as strengthen the lungs considerably, so that this condition is significantly controlled and possibly cured. Most individuals affected with bronchial asthma require regular treatment periods ranging from sixto nine months. Ayurvedic herbal treatment can thus be judiciously utilised in the management and treatment of bronchial asthma.

These conditions can be treated effectively with Ayurvedic medicines. In addition to treating the conduction defects, known causes also have to be treated concurrently. The scope of Ayurvedic treatment in such problems related to the heart is highlighted in patient testimonials such as the one given below: “Dear Dr Mundewadi, I really think your Ayurvedic medicine has saved me: last December 2010, I was taken to hospital for atrial fibrillation and given some medicine, multaq, which made me very weak, I could not have any activity, just go from bed to my armchair, and back to bed. I turned to Ayurvedic medicine, and Dr Mundewadi sent me his medication for atrial fibrillation; by that time I had stopped taking multaq because of its side effects and replaced it with a beta-blocker. I took the Ayurvedic medicine as well as the beta-blocker for 3 months, and at the end of May, went to my cardiologist who could not find any sign of atrial fibrillation; he told me to stop my beta-blocker and everything is fine, I am only taking warfarin and if all goes well, I will stop it in 6 months. I think it is a pity Ayurvedic medicine is not well known outside India; I think Indian doctors should make their medicine known all over the world. PS: Please feel free to use this testimonial, but just sign it with my initials, F.L.H., from France”.

Itching is usually caused because of a deposition of bile pigment under the skin. This symptom can be treated using medicines like Haridra, Amalaki, Trikatu and Triphala (Three fruits). Weight loss is usually treated by the basic treatment of the tumor itself. However, extensive weight loss can be treated using medicines like Suvarna-Malini-Vasant, Suvarna-Sutshekhar-Ras, Suvarna-Parpati, Panchamrut-Parpati, Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus), Bala (Sida cordifolia) and Naagbala (Grewia hirsuta). Medicines like Mahamanjishthadi-Qadha, Saarivasav, Kanchnaar-Guggulu and Punarnavadi-Qadha can be used to prevent the spread of the tumor to other parts of the body. These medicines, in combination with immunomodulatory medicines, have a combined effect in prolonging life for the affected patients. Immune-boosting medicines include Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum), Bhrungraj (Eclipta alba), Triphala, Abhrak-Bhasma, Suvarna-Bhasma and Heerak-Bhasma. CC is generally considered to have a poor prognosis with an overall survival of approximately six months, despite aggressive modern anti-cancer therapy and interventional supportive care. Ayurvedic treatment, therefore, has a definite role to play in treating this tumor and prolonging life.

This results in a reduction of the symptoms like pain in the abdomen, nausea, vomiting and fever. Herbal medicines which act on the liver, the gall bladder, and the common bile are given on a long-term basis, usually from three to six months. These medicines help in a normalization and correction of the liver cells so that they start secreting bile to an optimum level. These medicines also help to liquefy bile to the desired proportion, and prevent sludge formation in the gall bladder. In addition, herbal medicines are also given which have a strong action on the gall stones and help break-up the existing impacted stones in the common bile duct. These treatments help to dissolve the gall stones which have caused the gall bladder colic, and also help to prevent a recurrence of the condition. Regular and prolonged treatment is given for several months till the affected individual is completely relieved of the symptoms, and no recurrence of the pain is observed. The medicines are then gradually tapered off and stopped completely. In order to prevent recurrences, adequate dietary advice needs to be given; for example avoiding alcohol binges and regular intake of fatty foods. Ayurvedic herbal treatment is just very effective in the management and treatment of recurrent gall bladder colic.

Cholesteatoma

Cholesteatoma is a noncancerous growth which can occur in the middle ear canal. This usually results from keratinizing squamous epithelium in the middle ear and/or mastoid process. Though this is not a cancerous growth, it can cause considerable destruction of the inner ear and surrounding regions. It can therefore cause deafness, giddiness, ear discharge, pain and irritation of the facial nerve, and rarely cause infection and damage to the brain. A chronic and persistent ear discharge accompanied by deafness is usually taken to be due to cholesteatoma unless proved otherwise. Physicians need to be very alert in order to diagnose this condition in a timely manner. Modern management of this condition is by surgery; however the surgery itself can cause permanent damage and hearing loss.

Ayurvedic herbal treatment for Cholesteatoma

Ayurvedic herbal treatment for cholesteatoma is aimed at treating the growth aggressively so as to cause a complete remission at the earliest and prevent damage to the middle and inner ear structures as well as surrounding organs and brain. Herbal medicines which reduce tumor growth as well as act specifically on the ear are used in high doses. There are several medicines and herbal combinations which have a specific action on different diseases of the external and internal ear organs. A combination of these medicines is used in order to treat and cure the disease. Ayurvedic herbal treatment may be required for periods ranging from three to six months; however, regular assessment is important in order to ensure that the disease is responding to treatment so as to prevent risk of life and other complications.

Chronic Constipation

Constipation is defined as less than three bowel movements in a week, while severe constipation indicates less than one bowel movement per week. Constipation can be due to various causes which include habit, diet, the use of medications including overuse of laxative, hormonal disorders, and diseases of the intestines and of the central nervous system. Most medications including pain killers, antidepressants, iron supplements, and anticonvulsants, antacids containing aluminum, and calcium channel blockers can cause constipation; however, for most affected individuals, discontinuation of the medication is not necessary and a simple increase of dietary fiber may be an effective solution.

Ayurvedic herbal treatment for Chronic Constipation

The management of chronic constipation deals with giving symptomatic treatment for the constipation as well as treating the known causes of the condition. The commonest advice given to individuals with habitual constipation is to increase the water consumption and intake of dietary fiber. Fresh fruits and vegetables increase the bulk formation in the stools, and the regular intake of ample quantities along with liquids is sufficient to treat constipation in most affected individuals. A few individuals also need to be helped to inculcate the habit of regular or daily bowel evacuation, in order to treat constipation. A careful history needs to be taken for all the medications which need to be taken on a regular basis, in order to rule out treatable causes for the constipation. Ironically, constipation can also result from an overuse of laxatives. This results from a chronic irritation of the bowels. The treatment for this sort of constipation is to use Ayurvedic herbal medicines which facilitate normal bowel movement and also provide a soothing action on the inflamed intestinal mucosa. These herbal medicines also provide some amount of lubrication which reduces the inflammation in intestines and also helps in the evacuation of stools. Ayurvedic medicines have a very good effect on the gastrointestinal tract and help in improving appetite, aiding in digestion, as well as helping in assimilation of the digestion food particles and lastly, evacuation of the formed stools. Most Ayurvedic medicines therefore help in chronic constipation, do not have any adverse effects, and are also not habit forming. Depending upon the severity of constipation, most affected individuals need treatment for around one or two months after which the medicines can be gradually tapered off and stopped completely. Ayurvedic herbal treatment can thus be utilised to successfully treat chronic constipation.

Chronic Diarrhea

Diarrhea which lasts for more than two weeks is termed as chronic diarrhea. This medical condition is significant, since it can cause severe dehydration and may prove to be life-threatening for people with a compromised immune system. Chronic diarrhea can occur due to infections, food allergy, surgery, medications, hyperthyroidism, disturbed immunity, and some inherited disorders.

Ayurvedic herbal treatment for Chronic Diarrhea

The Ayurvedic herbal treatment for chronic diarrhea is based on treating the cause of the disease, as well as giving symptomatic treatment for chronic diarrhea. Ayurvedic medicines act very well on diseases of the gastrointestinal system, and are especially useful for digestion problems. Ayurvedic herbal medicines increase the secretion of digestive enzymes within the gastrointestinal tract, and help in the complete digestion and absorption of ingested food. Ayurvedic herbal medicines also reduce the sensitivity and intolerance of the digestive mucosa to different irritant substances. In addition, Ayurvedic herbal medicines also improve both the immunity of the gastrointestinal mucosa as well as the immunity of the affected person in general. In addition to providing symptomatic treatment, as well as treating the root cause of the disease, there are herbal Ayurvedic medicines which can be given after resolution of all the symptoms for four to six week courses. These medicines strengthen the entire gastrointestinal system, especially the gastrointestinal mucosa as well as all the organs such as the liver and pancreas, which are involved in secreting digestive enzymes into the intestine. This treatment prevents further recurrences of chronic diarrhea and the affected individual experiences a better immunity to ingested food. Ayurvedic herbal treatment can thus be judiciously utilised to manage and treat chronic diarrhea.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Chronic fatigue syndrome is a group of symptoms which last for six months or more. The syndrome includes symptoms such as loss of memory, sore throat, enlarged lymph nodes, muscular pain, joint pain without inflammation, headache, loss of sleep, and extreme exhaustion. This syndrome usually affects people in their 40s and 50s, and is seen more in women. This medical condition results from the after effects of a virus infection, inflammation of the nervous system, hormonal disturbances, or an immune-compromised status. It is important to rule out specific infections like tuberculosis, HIV and malignancy; diagnosis of this syndrome is mostly by excluding all other known diseases. Chronic fatigue syndrome, by its very chronic nature, results in social isolation, depression, loss of working hours, and severe life style restrictions.

Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy (CIDP)

Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP) is an acquired immune-related inflammatory disorder of the peripheral nervous system, usually involving the nerve roots. This condition involves the loss of protective covering of the peripheral nerves. Symptoms of CIDP can be quite variable, and include numbness, tingling, pain, burning pain, progressive muscular weakness, loss of deep tendon reflexes, and abnormal sensation. This condition usually results from an auto immune reaction. The symptoms may be progressive and intermittent. Autonomic dysfunction may be present in addition to the other symptoms, and includes symptoms like giddiness, bladder and bowel dysfunction, and cardiac problems. Investigations like electromyography and nerve conduction studies are necessary for the diagnosis of CIDP. The modern management of CIDP includes the use of steroids, plasmapheresis, intravenous immunoglobin and immuno-suppressants. The prognosis of this condition is variable and includes relapses and remissions.

Ayurvedic herbal treatment for Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy (CIDP)

Ayurvedic herbal treatment for CIDP involves the use of herbal medicines which have a specific action on nerve cells and on the entire nervous system. These medicines help in a gradual and progressive regeneration of damaged peripheral nerves, and thereby gradually reduce symptoms. Medicines may also be given for immunomodulation of the affected individual, so as to reduce the auto immune reaction and prevent further damage to the nervous system. Specific symptoms need to be treated separately. Supplementary treatment can be given in the form of local massage of the entire body or the affected limbs with the use of medicated oils, as well as the use of fomentation using medicated steam. This treatment can hasten the process of recovery and provide a sense of well-being. Depending upon the severity of the condition, treatment can be given for periods ranging from 6 to12 months. Most individuals affected with CIDP usually obtain significant improvement with the help of Ayurvedic herbal treatment. Long-term treatment with herbal medicines can also help to prevent relapses. Ayurvedic herbal treatment is thus very useful in the management and treatment of CIDP.

Chronic Low Back Pain or Back-ache

Chronic low back pain or back-ache can be due to different causes. A faulty posture with poor muscular tone is one of the most common causes for this condition, and can be easily remedied by regular exercises, some loss of weight, and adopting an active life-style.

Ayurvedic herbal treatment for Chronic Low Back Pain or Back-ache

There are however, several serious causes for this condition, which need energetic and effective treatment. A slipped or herniated disc is a common cause, and can cause chronic pain by exerting pressure on the nerves coming out from the inter-vertebral openings. Arthritis of the spine and sacro-iliac joints is another common condition which can cause chronic low back pain. These conditions can be treated using Ayurvedic medicines which reduce pain, swelling and inflammation, and also sooth irritated nerves. A combination of oral medicines and local treatment is very effective in relieving pain and muscular spasm. Rest may be required in the acute phase, while regulated activity and exercise is recommended in the chronic phase. A more serious cause of chronic, intractable low back pain is fracture and/or collapse of the vertebrae, resulting in bulging of the vertebral column, displacement of the vertebrae, and severe pressure on the nerves, which can result in neurological deficits, pain, limitation of movement, loss of sphincter control, and paralysis of limbs. Modern medicines are usually not successful in controlling the pain and neurological symptoms associated with this condition. Orthopoedic surgeons usually advise surgery to correct the condition; however, the results after surgery are usually not very promising. Some patients get partial benefit; some get no benefit; while a few may in fact have aggravation of pain, not to mention the risks usually associated with any major surgery. Ayurvedic treatment in such a situation can be very effective in relieving pain as well as neurological deficits, and can prevent further deterioration and loss of mobility. Treatment is aimed at strengthening the vertebrae, the spinal muscles, and treating the irritation and inflammation of nerves. Ayurvedic panchkarma procedures like medicated enema may be required in a few patients. It may be difficult for modern physicians to visualise how the structural pathology in this condition can be treated without actual physical manipulation of the vertebral column; however, experience has consistently shown that severely incapacitated patients have benefited from Ayurvedic treatment and do not experience a relapse in their condition. Ayurvedic treatment can thus prove to be a boon for patients with chronic and intractable low back pain.

Ayurvedic herbal treatment for COPD is aimed at treating the symptoms related to the respiratory tract such as wheezing, breathlessness and cough. Ayurvedic herbal medicines which reduce infection and inflammation in the lungs, soothe the mucosa lining the airways and gradually reduce the amount of abnormal mucous production, are used in high doses. This treatment brings about a significant reduction in the symptoms related to this condition. In addition, Ayurvedic herbal medicines are also given to strengthen the respiratory mucosa and normalize the cilia or tiny hair present in the upper respiratory tract. Ayurvedic herbal medicines are also used to treat the alveoli, which are the tiny terminal parts of the airways. The large airways as well as these alveoli get damaged and loose their elasticity in COPD and related conditions. This leads to a permanent dilatation and dysfunction of these parts, leading to a diminished capacity for oxygenation of the body. Ayurvedic medicines help to reverse the damage done in COPD and bring about an improved functioning of the lungs, thereby improving oxygenation of the body and reducing associated symptoms of COPD. Herbal medicines are also given to improve the general immune status of the affected individual as well as to strengthen the entire respiratory tract. People affected with COPD need to take regular treatment for about 4 to 6 months, in order to get significant improvement in symptoms related to COPD. If regularly taken, Ayurvedic herbal treatment can significantly reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with COPD.

Ayurvedic herbal medicines which have a specific action on the skin and mucous membranes as well as the underlying subcutaneous tissue, and the microcirculation supplying the skin and mucous membranes are used in high doses for prolonged periods, especially in the treatment of chronic urticaria. Ayurvedic herbal immunomodulatory agents also need to be combined with the above-mentioned medicines, in order to bring about a quick remission for chronic urticaria. In addition, if required, treatment also needs to be given to correct abnormalities in dysfunction of the gastrointestinal tract as well as chronic worm infestation. Most individuals affected with chronic urticaria require regular Ayurvedic herbal treatment for periods ranging from four to six months in order to get a complete remission and cure from the condition. Medicines may be continued in a lower those as maintenance therapy in order to prevent recurrence of the condition. It is advisable to refrain from known causes for chronic urticaria.

Claudication Intermittent

Intermittent claudication or pain is a medical condition which indicates peripheral arterial disease, while constant pain indicates a more serious and advanced condition. Claudication is usually because of atherosclerosis of the arteries in the extremities, which reduces blood supply to the limbs. Symptoms include pain in the legs and especially in the calves, and discolouration or ulceration of the skin. Claudication has certain associated risk factors such as smoking, high blood pressure, increased cholesterol, obesity, diabetes, age over 50 and a family history of the disease. The modern management of this condition includes cessation of smoking, regular exercise, especially walking, and other symptomatic treatment.

Ayurvedic herbal treatment for Claudication Intermittent

Ayurvedic herbal treatment for claudication includes treatment of the symptoms as well as treatment of the root cause of the disease. Ayurvedic herbal medicines are given to reduce atherosclerosis in the arteries, in the extremities in particular, and in general, all the arteries of the body. Herbal medicines which are useful in this condition reduce cholesterol, reduce the deposition of atheromatous plaques in the arteries and also reduce inflammation and stickiness in the walls of the arteries. Such treatment is given in high doses for about 4 to 6 months and usually provides significant relief from the symptoms of pain and discolouration of skin as well as possible ulceration. This is because this herbal treatment gradually reduces the blockage within the arteries and restores the blood supply to the affected parts. Other concurrent medical conditions such as high blood pressure, obesity, and diabetes also need to be treated simultaneously, in order to bring about a significant improvement of symptoms in the affected individual as well as to prevent a relapse. Cessation of smoking is a must along with the adoption of a healthy lifestyle such as regular walking and deep breathing, which help in reducing the treatment time for this condition. Ayurvedic herbal treatment can thus be judiciously utilised in the successful management and treatment of claudication.

Congestive Cardiac Failure (CCF)

A normal heart provides oxygenated blood to the entire body and also keeps all the cells of the body healthy and nourished. Congestive cardiac failure, also known as congestive heart failure is a condition in which the unhealthy heart is not able to keep up its pumping action in the required manner. The common symptoms of CCF include fatigue, breathlessness, edema of the lower limbs, increased urination, and decreased appetite. A simple x-ray of the chest shows an enlarged heart. CCF can be caused by related medical conditions such as heart attack, high blood pressure, diseases of the valves of the heart, and long-term alcohol and drug abuse.

Ayurvedic herbal treatment for Congestive Cardiac Failure (CCF)

The Ayurvedic herbal treatment of CCF includes symptomatic treatment to strengthen the heart as well as treatment of the known causes for the condition. Alcohol and drug abuse needs to be discontinued at the earliest, in order to prevent further damage to the heart. High blood pressure and diseases of the heart valves need to be treated, since these medical conditions over-exert the heart. Once the known causes of CCF have been controlled or treated, Ayurvedic herbo-mineral medicines are used in order to strengthen the heart muscles and improve oxygen supply to the heart. These medicines significantly improve the working capacity of the heart as well as its efficiency, in spite of the damage sustained by the heart. The Ayurvedic herbal treatment of CCF needs to be continued for at least four to six months in order to bring about significant improvement in individuals affected with CCF. The advantage of Ayurvedic herbal medicines is that these not only bring about an improvement in the working efficiency of the heart, but these changes are also maintained over time, so that the patient continues to experience the benefits even after discontinuing the medicines. Ayurvedic herbal treatment can thus bring about dramatic improvement in patients affected with CCF.

Cor Pulmonale

Cor pulmonale is a medical condition characterized by breathlessness, fatigue, cough, chest pain, and occasionally hemoptysis. This condition is normally caused by diseases of the respiratory system which cause inflammation within the respiratory tract and thereby block the pulmonary circulation due to which a back pressure is created on the right ventricle of the heart. Cor pulmonale may also be caused by pulmonary hypertension, which may be either idiopathic or secondary. Congestive cardiac failure caused by diseases of the left side of the heart is not considered within the medical entity of cor pulmonale. The modern management of this condition consists of giving symptomatic treatment for cough and breathlessness and using diuretics to reduce overload on the heart.

Ayurvedic herbal treatment for Cor Pulmonale

The Ayurvedic herbal treatment of cor pulmonale consists of giving symptomatic treatment to reduce breathlessness and cough, as well as treating the cause of the medical condition. Any known disease of the respiratory tract, such as chronic bronchitis, chronic asthmatic bronchitis, and interstitial lung disease are treated with appropriate herbal medicines to reduce the inflammation and congestion in the respiratory tract, so that the pathology in the respiratory tract can be reversed, and its adverse effects on the pulmonary circulation can be reduced or reversed completely. This results in a reversal of the pathology of cor pulmonale, thereby reducing the load on the right ventricle. Pulmonary hypertension, if present, needs to these treated separately with special Ayurvedic herbs which relax the pulmonary vessels and reduce the constant pressure on the heart and lungs. Most patients affected with cor pulmonale need to take treatment for at least four to six months in order to get significant improvement or a complete cure from cor pulmonale, so that the patient is free from all related symptoms, and there is no recurrence of the condition. It is important to adequately investigate the affected individual, so that concurrent diseases of the heart are treated with appropriate medicines. A judicious use of Ayurvedic herbal medicines can thus successfully treat patients affected with cor pulmonale and either cures the patient, or reduces symptoms significantly as well as improves the quality of life of the patient.

Coronary Artery Disease

Coronary artery disease is a medical condition which causes a reduced blood supply to the arteries supplying the heart by a process known as atherosclerosis, in which fatty deposits accumulate in the walls of the arteries. A partial block in the coronary arteries results in an attack of angina, while a complete block results in a heart attack.

Ayurvedic herbal treatment for Coronary Artery Disease

Ayurvedic herbal treatment for coronary artery disease is aimed at reducing the deposits of atheroma which obstruct the lumen of the arteries, as well as treating other risk factors for coronary artery disease. Ayurvedic herbal medicines which have a specific action on fat tissue and which prevent as also reduce atherosclerosis are used in high doses for prolonged periods in order to treat the root cause of coronary artery disease. These herbal medicines also reduce overall cholesterol and lipid levels in the blood and regulate the reposition of fat in all the tissues, including the arteries. Treatment also needs to be given for associated factors which contribute to an attack of angina or heart attack. These causes include stress, high blood pressure, and diabetes. All these contributory factors need to be treated aggressively so as to comprehensively reduce the risk for a heart attack. Lifestyle changes also need to be made in order to reduce stress, manage weight, and undertake regular physical activity. Most individuals who have confirmed atherosclerosis need Ayurvedic herbal treatment for periods ranging from three to nine months in order to significantly reduce the risk for heart attack. Regular physical activity in the form of brisk walking, jogging, aerobic exercises, yogic asanas or a judicious combination of all the above-mentioned is important in order to reduce atherosclerosis and to reduce the long-term risk for an attack of angina or heart attack. Individuals at risk also need to develop healthy eating habits and avoid foodstuffs containing high amounts of fat. Stress can be reduced with the help of yogic asanas and breathing exercises as well as relaxation techniques. Ayurvedic herbal treatment can thus contribute significantly in treating coronary artery disease and reducing the risk for heart attacks.

Treatment is in the form of oral medication as well as the local application of medicated oils or ointments, followed by fomentation. The pain felt in costochondritis is usually highly localized; however, in certain affected individuals, the location of the pain is not localized. In the treatment of such individuals, the local application of ointments is to be done in the entire affected area from the front part of the chest to the backbone. This is followed by fomentation, which usually gives very good results. Most people affected with costochondritis benefit with about 2 to 6 weeks of Ayurvedic therapy. Some individuals have a different type of costochondritis known as Teitz Syndrome, in which the inflammation takes a longer time to subside; however regular treatment for about 2 to 4 months usually suffices to bring about a complete relief from pain. Patients with costochondritis who have a history of trauma need to be investigated to rule out fracture of the ribs. If there is evidence of fracture, treatment needs to be slightly modified in order to treat the fracture. In such situations, it is important to rule out injury to internal organs like the lungs. Once this possibility is ruled out, treatment through oral medicines and local applications, along with medicines to bring about a faster healing of the fracture, usually suffices. Ayurvedic medicines can thus be judiciously used to treat costochondritis.

Crohn's Disease

Crohn's disease is an inflammatory bowel diseases which causes symptoms like chronic diarrhoea, abdominal pain, blood in the stool, ulceration of intestines, reduced appetite and weight loss, and in advanced cases, formation of fistulas and abscesses. Young white patients staying in urban areas and with a family history of the disease, or history of smoking, are more at risk for Crohn's disease. This disease occurs in patches inside the digestive tract and can often involve the entire tissue of the intestines. Crohn's disease is usually treated in the modern system of medicine with steroids, anti- inflammatory drugs, and immune suppressant medicines; however, the response to these medicines is not very encouraging.

Ayurvedic herbal treatment for Crohn's Disease

Ayurvedic herbal medicines are very effective in the treatment and correction of digestive tract abnormalities. Herbal medicines reduce inflammation in the intestines, improve digestive secretions, help in the digestion, and also optimize absorption of digested food elements. Herbal medicines also aid in normal bowel evacuation. In addition, Ayurvedic herbal medicines also treat inflammation and heal ulceration in the intestines. Ayurvedic herbal treatment is therefore very effective in the treatment and cure of chronic conditions of the intestinal tract such as Crohn's disease. In addition, Ayurvedic herbal medicines boost the immune status of the affected individual, which is mostly compromised in Crohn's disease. Immune regulation of the body helps in prompt healing of the ulceration in the intestines and prevents complications like fistulas and abscesses. Ayurvedic herbal medicines also remove toxins generated in the blood of affected individuals. In addition, herbal medicines aid in digestion and absorption of food, and therefore help the affected individual to gradually put on weight. Most people affected with Crohn's disease usually require Ayurvedic herbal treatment from about four to six months, depending upon the severity of the condition, and the immune status of the patient. Overall, almost all people affected with this disease recover completely from the condition provided they take regular treatment. Ayurvedic herbal treatment is thus very effective in the management and treatment of Crohn's disease.

Cushing's Syndrome

Cushing's syndrome is a medical condition which typically displays the side effects of high dose and chronic steroid therapy. Long-term exposure to high levels of cortisol hormone produce the classical signs of Cushing's syndrome which include a fatty hump between the shoulders, a rounded face, stretch marks on the skin, high blood pressure, bone loss, and diabetes. Cushing's syndrome is caused by prolonged use of steroid medications, pituitary gland or an ectopic ACTH secreting tumour, and a primary adrenal gland disease. The modern management of this condition includes discontinuation of steroids, surgery, radiation therapy, and oral medications.

Ayurvedic herbal treatment for Cushing's Syndrome

Ayurvedic herbal treatment for Cushing's syndrome involves treating the symptoms of the disease as well as treating the cause of the condition, if known. Herbal medicines which reduce oedema and retention of water in the body are used in the appropriate doses so as to reduce body oedema and high blood pressure. Herbal medicines and herbo mineral combinations which strengthen bone are used to correct the bone loss. Herbal antidiabetic medicines are used to treat diabetes, if present. If the cause of Cushing's syndrome is a tumour of the pituitary gland and brain, or adrenal gland, Ayurvedic herbal medicines which act specifically on the brain tissue and on the adrenal gland are used in high doses in order to treat the tumour. Medicines which act on the blood as well as the lymphatic circulation are also used so as to bring about an early resolution of the tumour as well as of the symptoms related to Cushing's syndrome. The high levels of cortisol are brought down by flushing the hormone from the circulatory system with the help of herbal medicines, either through the gastrointestinal system or through the kidneys and the urinary tract. Depending upon the severity and cause of Cushing's syndrome, individuals affected with this disorder need treatment for about six months to eighteen months. However, with regular Ayurvedic herbal treatment, almost all patients affected with Cushing's syndrome recover completely.

Cystic Fibrosis

Cystic fibrosis, also known as CF, Fibrocystic disease, or Mucoviscidosis, is an inherited disorder resulting from a faulty gene, due to which a protein controlling the movement of salt and water in the cells is not produced in the required quantities. Cystic fibrosis is predominantly a disease of the mucous and sweat glands and results in thick and sticky mucous and very salty sweat. This disease is seen mostly in Northern Europe and some parts of America. The common symptoms of this condition include thick sputum, salty skin, dehydration, male infertility, respiratory problems, diarrhoea, bulky and foul smelling stools, pain in the abdomen, and failure to thrive. In addition to respiratory problems, cystic fibrosis can also cause pancreatitis, intestinal blockage, nasal polyps, rectal prolapse, liver disease, diabetes, gall stones, and weakened bones. The sweat test is usually used for the diagnosis of cystic fibrosis.

Ayurvedic herbal treatment for Cystic Fibrosis

Ayurvedic herbal treatment for cystic fibrosis is aimed at giving symptomatic treatment for the presenting symptoms of this condition, as well as giving medicines to treat the root cause of the condition. Ayurvedic herbal medicines are given to treat the respiratory as well as gastrointestinal diseases resulting from this condition. In addition, Ayurvedic herbal medicines are given to reduce the thickness and stickiness of mucous as well as to reduce the amount of salt present in sweat. Ayurvedic herbal medicines which act on the lymphatic and blood tissue as also medicines acting on the fat tissue are used in combination, so that the movement of salt and water from within the cells of the body can be regulated correctly. In addition, Ayurvedic herbal medicines are also used which act on the DNA of the cells of the body so as to correct the dysfunctional gene to the maximum extent possible. This result in at least a partial secretion of the protein controlling the movement of salt and water, and cystic fibrosis can thereby be corrected. Treatment is required for about six to nine months in order to bring about a significant improvement both in the metabolism as well as in the resulting dysfunctions in the body. Ayurvedic herbal treatment can bring about a significant change in the quality of life of patients with cystic fibrosis, and can significantly improve survival.

Cytomegalovirus Infection (CMV)

Cytomegalovirus infection is a condition which is usually asymptomatic in normal and healthy individuals, but which can cause significant symptoms and affect almost any body organ in immunocompromised individuals. An infected mother can pass on the infection to her unborn child resulting in significant congenital abnormalities, or the mother may experience frequent abortions. The prognosis for Cytomegalovirus infection thus usually depends upon the underlying disease as well as the overall immune status of affected individual.

Ayurvedic herbal treatment for Cytomegalovirus Infection (CMV)

Ayurvedic herbal treatment for Cytomegalovirus infection is usually focused upon improving the immune status of affected individuals. Ayurvedic herbal immunomodulatory agents are used in high uses so as to boost the immune status in as short time as possible, so as to reduce the total treatment time of affected individual, reduce the severity of symptoms, prevent complications, and avoid recurrence of the infection. In order to treat the infection, Ayurvedic herbal medicines which have a known anti-viral action can also be used to control the infection at the earliest so as to treat the symptoms and prevent long-term complications. Pregnant women who are positive for TORCH infections or who have a history of recurrent abortions or congenital abnormalities in the newborn can be treated with Ayurvedic herbal medicines to remove the root cause of the condition. Treatment for Cytomegalovirus infection can be started about two or three months in advance of conception, so as to prevent complications during childbirth as well as prevent congenital abnormalities in the newborn. The duration of treatment for Cytomegalovirus infection in immunocompromised individuals depends upon the severity of the infection as well as the immune response of the patient; however, almost all individuals benefit significantly from Ayurvedic herbal treatment and can obtain a long lasting cure from this condition. Ayurvedic herbal treatment thus has a significant contribution to play in the management and treatment of Cytomegalovirus infection.

Dark and Light Skin Patches

Skin patches result from disturbances in the skin pigmentation. This can be due to different causes such as trauma, infection, vascular growths, and skin diseases. An increase in the skin pigmentation can cause darkening of the skin, whereas a decrease in the pigmentation can cause light patches on the skin. Exposure to the sun and contact with chemicals and cosmetics can also cause skin patches. The treatment of skin patches depends upon the known cause for the condition. The modern management of this condition is usually in the form of local application of different types of ointments.

Ayurvedic herbal treatment for Dark and Light Skin Patches

The Ayurvedic treatment of skin patches involves the use of herbal medicines which act on the skin, the subcutaneous tissue, and the underlying muscle and vascular structure. Ayurvedic treatment also aims to remove impurities and toxins from the blood so as to permanently treat the skin patches and prevent recurrence. In some individuals who have recurrent skin patches, there may also be a need to boost the immunity so that recurrent viral and bacterial infections can be avoided. Most of the Ayurvedic herbal medicines which are useful in the treatment of skin patches have a multipronged action useful in all sort of skin diseases. These medicines are useful in improving the immunity of the skin and underlying tissues, so that recurrent infections can be prevented. They also reduce vascular growths and normalize the action of the skin pigment. In addition, they normalize the circulation in the affected area, so that any abnormality present in the skin and underlying tissue can be gradually corrected through the blood flow. Skin patches, both dark as well as light, can be treated completely with the regular use of Ayurvedic medicines for periods ranging from 1 to 6 months. The response of different individuals to the medicines can be different; hence the wide range in the duration of treatment. Local applications are also very important in the treatment of skin patches. Dark skin patches require different ointments while light skin patches naturally require different medicines to be applied locally. Ointments required for dark skin patches are usually soothing in nature and work to reduce the pigment in the area. On the other hand, ointments which are useful in the treatment of light skin patches are more strong and irritant in nature, and serve to increase the pigment in the affected area. Some people affected with multiple skin patches all over the body may need generalised treatment to treat the skin and blood abnormalities and to boost the overall immunity of the body.

Dementia

Dementia is a medical condition in which there is a gradual decline in cognitive functions which include reasoning, memory and other mental abilities. Dementia gradually impairs day-to-day activities such as household work, driving, and personal care such as bathing, dressing, and feeding. This condition affects about 1% of the elderly population and is different from age-related memory loss in which an individual may forget small details but will still be able to learn new things and is generally overall self-dependent. Dementia can be of two types: irreversible which includes causes such as brain damage resulting from Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia and Parkinson's disease; the reversible type of dementia includes causes such as head injury, infections, CSF fluid accumulation, tumours, metabolic and hormonal disorders, drug reactions, toxic exposure, and poor oxygen supply.

Ayurvedic herbal treatment for Dementia

Ayurvedic herbal treatment for dementia involves the use of Ayurvedic herbal medicines which act on the brain, strengthen the brain cells, improve neurotransmission between the brain synapses, and gradually help reverse the process of degeneration in the brain. Ayurvedic herbal medicines which act on the central nervous system are used in high doses for prolonged periods, in order to treat dementia. Treatment is also given to correct any known causes for the condition, such as inflammation, infection, pressure due to tumour or excess fluid, the development of toxicity due to drugs or chemicals, as well as the correction of metabolic and hormonal disorders. Treatment of atherosclerosis and a gradually diminishing supply of oxygen to the brain is an important aspect of treatment especially in the elderly, and more so in individuals with known cardiovascular disease. It is important that a correct diagnosis of dementia be made at the earliest, This helps in commencing early treatment and in halting the degeneration of the brain cells. Depending upon the severity of the condition, individuals affected with dementia may require Ayurvedic herbal treatment for periods ranging from 6 to 15 months.

Dengue Fever

Dengue fever is a type of fever which is caused by transmission of the dengue virus through mosquito bite. This fever is characterized by high temperature, severe body pain, vomiting, and skin rash. This fever usually subsides after standard treatment with painkillers and symptomatic medication for fever. More severe manifestations of the fever require administration of intravenous fluids, after which the fever subsides rapidly. A severe manifestation of dengue fever is known as dengue hemorrhagic fever, in which disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) occurs. This results in generalized bleeding in the body and can prove to be serious or even fatal.

Ayurvedic herbal treatment for Dengue Fever

The Ayurvedic management of dengue fever consists of giving symptomatic treatment for all the symptoms. The Ayurvedic medicines given for fever usually also reduce skin rash and burning sensation in the body. Additional treatment needs to be given to treat the severe body pain, which is usually characteristic of this fever. Other symptoms like vomiting and diarrhea have to be treated separately. Treatment of disseminated intravascular coagulation has to be done aggressively in order to prevent morbidity and mortality from this condition. Usually, the bleeding results from gross inflammation of the blood vessels and small capillaries all over the body. This inflammation can be controlled by using Ayurvedic herbal medicines in high doses, which act swiftly and thereby prevent or reduce hemorrhage within the body. Treating the blood also reduces toxins present within the blood and thereby prevents any further complications. As mentioned previously, most individuals suffering from dengue fever respond rapidly; however, this condition is not to be taken lightly and treatment has to be instituted as early as possible, and affected individuals need to be under close supervision. Timely treatment and medication has been known to prevent serious complications.

Dermographism

Dermographism is a condition in which the skin displays an exaggerated response to physical pressure. The response is in the form of redness, swelling, itching and possibly oozing. The symptoms are aggravated by heat, minor pressure, exercise, stress, and emotion. Dermographism is usually seen in young adults and can be either acute, intermediate reaction type, or present as a delayed form of reaction.

Ayurvedic herbal treatment for Dermographism

The Ayurvedic treatment of Dermographism consists of treating the skin as well as the subcutaneous tissue and the microcirculation of the skin in such a way so as to reduce or normalise the exaggerated skin response to pressure. Treatment is given both as oral medication as well as local application. Local application is usually done on the entire skin of the body, and soothing herbal medicated oils and ointments are used for this purpose. These soothing medications reduce the hyper reactivity of the skin and prevent symptoms of Dermographism to a great extent. Ayurvedic herbal medicines are given orally in order to treat the blood tissue, blood vessels, the capillaries immediately below the skin and in the subcutaneous tissue in order to reduce the hyper reactive component in the blood and in the subcutaneous tissue cells. Herbal medicines are also given to soothe the irritable nerves below the skin, since this is an important aspect of treatment. Herbal medicines which have a strengthening and soothing action on the nerves are given for prolonged periods, and these medicines have a dual action out of which the first part is locally on the skin and the second part is on the brain, so that the entire nervous system of the affected individual is acted upon. This helps in turn to reduce the Dermographism symptoms from the entire skin of the body. Depending upon the severity of the condition, and the known aggravating factors, Ayurvedic herbal treatment for Dermographism is usually required for about two to six months, in which period most patients get completely cured.

Diabetes Complications

Diabetes mellitus is a medical condition which results in inadequately metabolized and excess glucose in the blood. This excess glucose causes adverse effects on the entire body, especially on the heart, kidneys, eyes, nerves, extremities, the gastrointestinal system, and the brain. Untreated diabetes mellitus can cause numerous complications in the different organs and body systems. In addition to treatment of diabetes, a large number of individuals affected with diabetes also need separate treatment for the complications of diabetes.

Ayurvedic herbal treatment for Diabetes Complications

Ayurvedic herbal medicines can be used very effectively to treat complications resulting from chronic diabetes. The advantage and importance of using Ayurvedic herbal medicines in individuals affected with diabetes is that these medicines are safe for prolonged use, they treat most of the complications successfully, and they have an additional bonus of reducing blood sugar. Ayurvedic herbal medicines can thus comprehensively treat diabetes mellitus. Ayurvedic medicines stimulate the pancreas to start secreting adequate amounts of insulin in order to completely metabolize glucose in the blood, so that this glucose can be taken up by the cells of the body and utilised for their benefit. Ayurvedic medicines also provide adequate blood supply to all the parts of the body so that nourishment in the form of glucose, oxygen, and other nutrients is provided regularly to the entire body. This prevents degeneration and dysfunction of the various organs and systems in the body. Ayurvedic herbal medicines also stimulate the important organs like the heart and kidneys as well as the gastrointestinal system to function at an optimum level, so that no dysfunction of the organs or systems is observed. Regular treatment with Ayurvedic herbal medicines prevents deterioration of vision as well as a degeneration of the nerves. Complications like neuropathy, intermittent diarrhea and constipation, heart attacks, and kidney failure which can be observed in chronic or untreated diabetes are thereby completely prevented with the regular use of Ayurvedic herbal medicines. Several Ayurvedic medicines have been proved to conclusively reduce blood sugar levels in diabetic patients and the regular use of such medicines keeps diabetic patients well for prolonged periods. Most such diabetic individuals can therefore enjoy drug-free holidays, provided they regularly monitor their blood sugar levels. Ayurvedic herbal treatment is therefore very effective in providing treatment and improving the quality of life of diabetic patients, as well as preventing complications from diabetes.

Diabetes Mellitus

Diabetes mellitus is a medical condition in which the body is unable to produce sufficient amount of insulin to enable a normal glucose uptake by the body cells, thereby resulting in increased blood sugar levels.Type1 diabetic patients produce significantly less amounts of insulin while type 2 diabetic patients cannot cope up due to increased weight and metabolic dysfunction. Because of this, type 1 diabetic patients usually required insulin injections while type 2 diabetic patients can control their blood sugar with a combination of diet, weight management, exercise, and medications.

Ayurvedic herbal treatment for Diabetes Mellitus

Ayurvedic herbal treatment for diabetes mellitus involves the proper use of Ayurvedic herbal medicines which have a specific action on the glucose metabolism of the body and which help the insulin-secreting pancreas to discharge its functions in a normal manner. Treatment needs to be tailor-made according to the requirements of each individual patient, and may also depend upon the type of diabetes mellitus. Type 2 diabetic patients usually require medicines both to lower blood sugar, increase insulin secretion as well as reduce body fat and overall body weight. Type 1 diabetic patients require medicines which specifically act on the pancreas and stimulate it to secrete increased quantities of insulin so as to suit the body requirements. Diabetes mellitus is a chronic medical condition and usually requires lifelong adjustments, so as to minimize symptoms, and carry on a near normal life with the minimum required medications. Discipline, patience, and strict control of day to day activities as well as lifestyle is a must in the successful management of diabetes mellitus. Diet regulation, regulated physical activity, and weight control are very important in order to successfully regulated blood sugar, and minimize the chances for long-term complications resulting from diabetes mellitus. The proper use of Ayurvedic herbal medicines can significantly alter the overall prognosis of diabetes mellitus.

Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DIC)

Disseminated intravascular coagulation is a serious medical disorder in which there is a failure of generalised coagulation of the blood in the entire body. This usually results from acute or serious infections, severe trauma, or as a result of other diseases. Disseminated intravascular coagulation is usually characterized by generalised bleeding, septic shock, and multiple organ failure. This condition needs to be treated in the intensive care of a hospital; however, the management in such a situation is mostly for life support and care, with the addition of steroids to treat the condition, and antibiotics for possible infection.

Ayurvedic herbal treatment for Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DIC)

The Ayurvedic herbal treatment of disseminated intravascular coagulation is aimed at treating the generalised inflammation process which commences in this condition. It is this inflammation which acts upon the arteries, veins, and the capillaries and results in a generalised bleeding and oozing in the entire body. The inflammatory process also gives rise to toxins which harm different vital organs and thereby cause multiple organ failure. Ayurvedic medicines are given to promptly treat the inflammation, to boost the immunity of the body, and to protect all the vital organs. Treatment is also given to treat the blood and blood vessels, so that harmful toxins and products of inflammation are swiftly removed from the body, usually through the urine. Treatment of the inflammation also treats fever as well as infection present in the body. Care is also taken to individually treat the vital organs such as the heart, lungs, liver, and kidneys. If not treated aggressively and correctly, disseminated intravascular coagulation can produce considerable morbidity and mortality. It is important, in the best interest of the patient, to combine hospital intensive care and judicious Ayurvedic treatment so as to treat the condition promptly and save life. Not only in the treatment of disseminated intravascular coagulation, but in the treatment of all serious medical conditions, the benefits of Ayurvedic therapy need to be well-documented and universally publicized.

Dissociative Disorders

Dissociative disorders constitute serious mental illness in which affected individuals escape reality in involuntary and unhealthy ways by suppressing memories or assuming alternate identities, usually to escape from or cope up with some form of trauma. The common symptoms of this condition include memory loss for certain time periods, events and people, mental health problems, depersonalization, derealization, and a blurred sense of identity. Dissociative disorders are usually of four types which include amnesia, identity disorder, fugue and the personalization. Treatment for this condition includes psychotherapy, hypnosis, medication, creative art therapy, and cognitive therapy, in which collective treatment may be required with coordinated efforts by a Psychiatrist, counselor, and social worker, possibly with a support system from family and friends. Though treatment can be difficult, many individuals suffering from this disorder are able to learn new ways of coping and lead healthy, productive lives.

Ayurvedic herbal treatment for Dissociative Disorders

Ayurvedic herbal treatment can be given either as independent therapy or as a supportive therapy to the modern management of this condition. Joint teamwork is usually preferable in successfully and safely handling such affected individuals. Ayurvedic medicines can be used in the management of this condition which help the affected individuals to cope up with trauma and help to adjust and accept reality. Ayurvedic medicines work on the nervous system as well as the brain and affect the thinking process of individuals in order to remove derealization and depersonalization, and bring about acceptance of reality and normal behaviour. Treatment needs to be aggressive and long-term in order to bring about good results. Ayurvedic oral medication can also be supplemented with different Panchkarma treatments such as Shiro Basti, Shirodhara, medicated enemas, and full body massage. These Panchkarma treatments help to bring about earlier results, and improve the chances of full recovery. Depending upon the severity of the condition and degree of psychosis, most individuals affected with this condition require treatment ranging from six months to several years. Ayurvedic herbal treatment thus has definite and significant role to play in the management and treatment of dissociative disorders.

Down Syndrome

Down syndrome is a genetic disorder which has characteristic physical diagnostic features. This medical condition is not inherited, but is caused by genetic variations involving the 21st chromosome and is of 3 types which include the Trisomy 21, the Mosaic Down syndrome, and the translocation Down syndrome. The distinctive features of Down syndrome include flattened facial features, a protruding tongue, a small head, upward slanting eyes, unusual shaped ears, broad and short hands with relatively short fingers, and poor muscle tone which causes excessive flexibility. Down syndrome can cause severe learning disability as well as complications like heart defects, leukemia, susceptibility to infection, dementia in later life, and other structural and functional problems.

Ayurvedic herbal treatment for Down Syndrome

The Ayurvedic herbal treatment for Down syndrome is aimed at treating the known structural and functional defects in the affected individual as well as giving medicines to strengthen the nerves and muscles of the body so as to prevent long-term complications. Ayurvedic herbal medicines are given to strengthen the brain as well as the nervous system in order to prevent or minimize learning disability and neuromuscular incoordination, and also prevent or minimize the chances for dementia in later life. Immunomodulatory herbal agents are also given on a long-term basis in order to improve the immune status of the body and minimize the susceptibility to infection as well as to the possibility of diseases like leukemia. If the affected individual presents for treatment as a young infant, it is not possible to diagnose at that stage how Down syndrome is going to affect the individual in the long run. In such a situation, Ayurvedic herbal medicines which act on the different tissues of the body and improve and normalize the metabolism of the tissues are used in minute doses on a long-term basis, so as to possibly prevent structural complications like heart defects and dysfunction of different organs in the future. Ayurvedic herbal medicines can also be given to expectant mothers who have pregnancies late in life, where the possibility for Down syndrome in the child increases. Similarly, mothers who have a history of children with Down syndrome can also be given medicines during future pregnancies, in order to possibly reduce the chances for having a child again with Down syndrome.

Dysfunctional Uterine Bleeding

Dysfunctional uterine bleeding is a medical condition related to abnormal bleeding from the uterus which is usually associated with ovulation failure and there are no other detectable organic causes for the condition. A diagnosis of dysfunctional uterine bleeding or DUB is usually made only when all other known causes for uterine bleeding have been ruled out.

Ayurvedic herbal treatment for Dysfunctional Uterine Bleeding

Ayurvedic herbal treatment for dysfunctional uterine bleeding is aimed at giving symptomatic treatment of the bleeding as well as treating the known causes for the condition. Ayurvedic herbal medicines which have a specific action on the uterus, the ovaries, and the brain centers which regulate the working of entire genital system, are used in high doses for several months in order to provide complete relief from both the symptoms as well as any possible causes for the disease. Herbal medicines regulate any possible dysfunction of the hormones in the affected individual and also reduce inflammation and treat any possible infection in the genital tract. Since ovulation failure or a dysfunction of the ovaries is believed to be the prime cause for dysfunctional uterine bleeding, medicines which act specifically on the ovaries are used for about three to six months. These medicines act on the ovaries and reduce inflammation and any possible fluid collection. Herbal medicines also act on the ovaries and help them to function normally. This helps in controlling and correcting the dysfunctional uterine bleeding. In addition, medicines which act on the uterus also have an additional function of reducing inflammation and swelling in the mucosa of the uterus in addition to having a direct action of controlling the bleeding. Most affected women complaining of chronic dysfunctional uterine bleeding also have other problems like weakness, giddiness, anemia etc. All these problems need to be treated with appropriate herbal medicines. Ayurvedic herbal treatment can thus be judiciously utilised in the management and treatment of dysfunctional uterine bleeding.

Dyshidrosis

Dyshidrosis is also known as pompholyx or dyshidrotic eczema and is a skin condition which causes small, fluid filled vesicles on the palms and soles. These blisters cause intense itching and usually dry up after about 3 weeks, leaving behind painful fissures. The risk factors for this condition include female sex, stress, history of seasonal allergies, exposure to metal salts, and frequent exposure to water.

Ayurvedic herbal treatment for Dyshidrosis

Ayurvedic herbal treatment for dyshidrosis is aimed at treating the vesicles in the palms and soles, reducing itching, and either preventing or treating the fissures which form afterward. Treatment is also aimed at healing the skin condition and preventing its recurrence. Ayurvedic herbal medicines which have a specific action on skin, subcutaneous tissue, and the capillaries supplying the skin, are used in the treatment of this condition. These medicines remove the toxins from the blood, reduce allergic components which can cause skin conditions, and bring about early healing of the skin lesions. These medicines also improve and strengthen the connective tissue of the skin and the subcutaneous tissue. Treatment is mainly in the form of oral medication; however, this can be supplemented with Ayurvedic local therapy in the form of application of medicated ointments, pastes and oils, which have a curative and moisturizing action on the skin. Local applications can reduce itching and also prevent or treat the formation of blisters as well as help to prevent secondary infection in the lesions. Depending upon the severity of the condition, most individuals affected with dyshidrosis require treatment for about four to six weeks in order to completely heal the condition. Individuals who have recurrence of the condition may require treatment for about three to four months, in order to comprehensively treat the skin condition as well as improve the immune status of the affected individuals. Medicines may also be required to treat stress. Over exposure to water needs to be attended to.

Dyslexia

Dyslexia is the most common form of learning disability in children and can cause a dysfunction in the child's ability to read, write, spell, or speak. Dyslexia is not caused by vision or hearing problems or as a result of brain damage, impaired intelligence, or mental retardation. This medical condition results more from impairment in the brain’s ability to translate images received from the eyes or ears into understandable language.

Ayurvedic herbal treatment for Dyslexia

The modern management of dyslexia includes an accurate diagnosis, a specification of the actual learning disability of the affected child, and organized teamwork in order to help create optimum learning conditions and practical avenues for optimum academic performance of the child. Ayurvedic herbal treatment can be added as supportive treatment in the management of dyslexia. Ayurvedic herbal medicines which have a specific action on the central nervous system are used in high doses and for prolonged periods in children affected with dyslexia. The advantage of using these medicines is that these medicines have a specific action on the brain cells as well as on the neurotransmitters connecting the brain cell synapses, and are safe for long-term use even in children. Ayurvedic herbal treatment needs to be given for about six to twelve months in order to bring about a significant improvement in the ability of the dyslexia child to read, write, spell words or speak correctly. Eczema

Eczema, also known as dermatitis, is a skin condition characterised by irritation of the skin, which leads to rash, oozing and subsequent crust formation in the affected area. Repeated bouts of scratching lead to thickening and blackening of the skin. Eczema can present in different ways in adults and children. Depending upon the site affected, the presentation of eczema can also be quite varied. While not considered to be a serious or life-threatening medical condition, eczema can be socially embarrassing and psychologically disturbing. It is also usually associated with other allergy-induced disorders such as asthma and allergic rhinitis.

Ayurvedic herbal treatment for Eczema

Recurrence is characteristic of this skin condition. Modern treatment for eczema involves the use of steroids and anti-allergic medicines in the form of oral medication or local application, to relieve inflammation and itching. While the eczema responds immediately to this treatment, it subsides for a few days, after which the entire process of rash, itching and oozing starts all over again. Ayurvedic treatment too can be given in the form of local application as well as oral medication. Treatment is aimed at reversing the entire disease-producing process, and not just for relieving the symptoms. Eczema can be treated with the use of only herbal medicines, which are completely safe, even for prolonged use. Skin inflammation and rash is treated in such a way as to both relieve symptoms as well as to reduce the sensitivity of the skin, and strengthen the layers of the skin, so that they become immune to challenging elements, both external as well as internal. Blood as well as blood vessels are also treated for inflammation and sensitivity, to further reduce chances of a recurrence. Lastly, medicines are given to soothe nerves as well as the brain, so that the eczema can be completely eradicated, and the chances for recurrence are minimised, or prevented altogether. Other associated medical conditions also need consideration while treating eczema. Affected individuals suffering from eczema since several decades have been observed to become free from this condition after taking regular treatment for just 3-6 months, without suffering a relapse. It is best to avoid known causative and precipitating factors for this condition.

Enlarged Vestibular Aqueduct Syndrome (EVAS)

The vestibular aqueduct is a tiny bony canal which extends from the inner ear endolymphatic space towards the brain. Enlarged vestibular aqueduct can cause symptoms associated with hearing and balance, and this is known as enlarged vestibular aqueduct syndrome (EVAS). Genetic and environmental factors are responsible for this condition. About 70 to 80% of this condition causes only hearing loss and is therefore non-syndromic. The Pendred syndrome causes hearing loss as well as thyroid dysfunction and is seen in one-third cases of EVAS. Sometimes the neck as well as the kidneys can also be affected in addition to hearing dysfunction. Usually, hearing is normal in the first few years of life. Hearing loss becomes noticeable in early childhood, usually after incidents like head trauma, upper respiratory tract infection, jumping, and air travel. Usually there is a gradually progressive hearing loss, tinnitus as well as vertigo. Children experience balance and coordination problems. Hearing loss is usually sensorineural in origin, but may rarely also be due to conductive hearing impairment. The long-term course of this condition is variable, and varies from few symptoms to profound hearing loss as well as severe associated symptoms.

Ayurvedic herbal treatment for EVAS is related to providing symptomatic improvement according to the presentation of symptoms in each individual. Herbal medicines are given to possibly reduce the size of the bony canal which is responsible for symptoms. Other herbal medicines are used to reduce the pressure of the excess fluid which is responsible for causing hearing loss and other symptoms. Long-term Ayurvedic treatment is also given so as to protect the outer and inner sensory hair from getting damaged due to EVAS. Associated symptoms in the syndromic condition need to be treated accordingly. The main aim of treatment with Ayurvedic herbal medicines is to bring about in improvement in the hearing loss as well as prevent long-term permanent damage related to the ears as well as to the other organs in the body. Herbal treatment is safe for long-term use and can therefore be safely used both in children as well as affected adults. Treatment with Ayurvedic herbal medicines needs to be started as early as possible, in order to obtain the maximum possible benefit from treatment. Ayurvedic treatment initially needs to be given for periods ranging from six months to one year, and later on can be given as required. Ayurvedic herbal treatment thus has a significant role to play in the management and treatment of EVAS.

While steroids promptly reduced the inflammation and pain, in most affected individuals, these medicines need to be continued permanently or on a long-term basis, which is not usually desirable because of the side-effects of steroids. In most instances, the inflammation recurs after the steroids have been stopped. Ayurvedic herbal treatment is especially useful in the treatment of giant cell arteritis or temporal arteritis. Ayurvedic medicines reduce the inflammation within the arteries promptly, while the pain within the arteries as well as in the surrounding areas also subsides quickly. In addition, treatment with Ayurvedic herbal medicines also prevents recurrence of the disease. An important advantage of Ayurvedic herbal medicines is that it can prevent complications like blindness. This is because Ayurvedic medicines treat inflammation and prevent blockage of the arteries. Ayurvedic herbal treatment is therefore very effective in the treatment and cure of giant cell arteritis or temporal arteritis.

Hearing Loss

Hearing loss which requires treatment can be of three types: Sensorineural hearing loss, conductive hearing loss, and a mixed type which involves hearing loss with both the previously mentioned types. It is best to conduct a thorough medical examination as well as an audiometry test to correctly diagnose the cause and type of hearing loss.

Ayurvedic herbal treatment for Hearing Loss

Ayurvedic medicines are effective in all types of hearing loss. The aim of treatment in sensorineural hearing loss is to help regenerate the auditory nerve, the parts of the inner ear connected to the auditory nerve, as well as to strengthen the hearing centre in the brain. Depending upon the severity of nerve damage, treatment from 3-6 months is usually required to help restore hearing to normal or near-normal levels. Other concurrent medical conditions like diabetes and hypertension may also have an impact upon the duration of treatment and the improvement observed with Ayurvedic medicines. In addition, elderly people with other nervous system involvement , for example, diseases like Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease, may also need to be treated concurrently for these diseases, before they can get benefit for hearing loss. Conductive hearing loss is usually related to damage in the middle ear, due to various reasons like recurrent infections, trauma, or congenital defects. The aim of treatment in this type of hearing loss is to repair the damage in the middle ear - usually related to the small bones which connect the ear drum to the auditory nerve. Ossification of these bones is the usual end-result, whic causes hearing loss.Treatment is aimed at healing these damaged bones to the extent possible, and removing or treating any known cause for the condition. Ayurvedic medicines are unique in the sense that they have the capacity to reduce the ossification and gluing together of the bones in the middle ear, and allow the natural hearing process to resume. Mixed type of hearing loss has to be treated depending upon the severity of each component present in the affected individual. In addition, most affected people also have tinnitus or buzzing sound in the ear. Most of the times, it is related to nerve damage or a disturbance in the semi-circular canals of the ear. This too needs to be treated, since it may severely incapacitate the affected individual. Treatment is usually aimed at reducing the pressure in these canals, and reducing the stickiness of fluid present inside.
